Homemaking with a cheerful spirit

Michelle Avatar

When I first became a full-time homemaker, I had a lot of trouble keeping a cheerful spirit when it came to washing dishes! I was transitioning from working outside of the home to working in the home full-time and it was hard at first and still can be hard some days. I remember thinking of how my Mom actually *enjoyed* washing dishes and she did not have a dishwasher like I do. Today, it is not such a struggle like it was at the beginning because I decided to change my attitude about washing dishes.

My thoughts on the matter changed from, “This is all I do all day long,” to thinking about what a blessing it was that our family was able to enjoy meals all day. It is a blessing to be able to stay home and focus on being a wife and mother that God wants me to be without the added responsibility of working outside the home. The task didn’t change but my perspective did.

I will turn on some great music while washing dishes, get lost in my thoughts, or listen to a podcast while washing the dishes. Dish washing is now seen as an enjoyable activity and not a dreaded chore. We each have the choice to make a task enjoyable or detestable. It is all about how we choose to see it!
