Blending a consonant and short vowel is an essential skill to be learned by your child as he learns to read. After your child learns all of his short vowels and starts to learn his consonant sounds, he can start to blend a consonant and vowel together. From this step, it is easy for your child to read CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words.
A great way to practice consonant and short vowel blends is to watch learning videos that make learning repetition fun and interesting.
Another easy way to practice blends is to make flashcards. Hide the flashcards around the room and give your child a blend sound and he must find that blend card and come back and tell you the sound on the card. Simple, yet fun!
The next way to practice is to play Go Fish with the blend cards. Make two sets of each blend and play with several blends at once so that you have enough cards. Deal out 5 cards to each player. When your child is asking for a certain blend, he must say that blend sound. Continue playing and practicing blends.
There are many ways to practice blends so that your child is able to see the blend and say it quickly. This skill will help your child to begin to read CVC words very soon!
